Rubber Bounty

Feeling the reprehensible terror

because it just struck you

that you got left behind.

It was everyone else who already knew

what life meant because they

didn’t think too hard about it;

believing in their common sense

instead of what their heads said.

Isn’t that how it goes

when those who surrounded you

already knew

something was up?

that, when it came right down to it,

you knew they didn’t speak for

those who couldn’t.

but, you and I keep doing that, don’t we?

they’d just look at them with

their blank stare of impunity

and the buck passed back to us

just as goddamned righteous as it always did.

And, remember that homogenous ‘delta t?’

well, that was surely one of the problems, here

that you agreed with me on.

we wrapped our hands around

that rubber bounty

that never stops its religious consistency.

you also knew that

the speed of light and those biological

constraints that bind men and women to each other

were devised by one unified programmer

who most of us who hang on to the idea

we all are actually sane, call him

by another name

(and, by the way, it’s not ‘brother,’ either)

as we had specified, he, himself must have devised lesser deeds

of evil men and rust borne machinery,

which came from nothing

we had speculated,

as we all aspire to do…

(nothing sure ain’t cracked up to what it ought

to be, isn’t it?)

that’s why there’s something there,

yet can’t feel it,

the way you cannot see

when you are looking.

It never was

nor ever will be

 caught between

but prideful

who dare sit

in their chairs

time pass on

the young rope swings.
