The Shadow Boxer

When I was a

lad

I couldn’t wait to

watch

Cassius

the shadow boxer

Ali

on

his

next heavy weight

bout

But

when he renamed

himself

Muhammad

I didn’t understand it

had something to do with his

religion

I also didn’t get

why he was

a

conscientious objector

during the Vietnam War,

either

Yet,

even though young

I

saw a

 kindness

about the man

as

he knocked out

whites

browns

and blacks

alike

I didn’t care who

got floored

I always

rooted

for Ali

to come out on top

and he did

to me,

he

wasn’t black

and

I wasn’t white

he was a symbol of

the

human potential

that anyone can overcome

almost any obstacle

if he were determined enough

and,

it was

just

ME

watching

a great

American

Hero

Clay

on

my living room

TV
