are we, drunk, billiards, poetry, steven humphreys

Are we

Are we of God?

did small pieces break off him

so he wouldn’t be alone?

animals don’t soul search

they don’t require

family therapists

no one has to tell them anything

they are who they should be

‘themselves’

they are the genuine

souls abounding

they wonder not

what death is like

but

what of us?

Wait…

I forget

where

I hid myself

it’s dark down here

I have to find my way

out!

God save me…

Oh,

I see a door!

Darn,

it’s locked!

let me think…

where did I put my matches?!

I need a light

to search the darkness for

the key to unlock

this door

which has to have

a

hallway

to

the mysterious realm!

Well…

Look at that!

what is it?

Oh, I see…

A can of beer

and a bottle of wine!?

Just what I needed…

both at once

I’ve had my fun

plenty of it

yet,

there’s always room

for more

parties…

but

they better not try to take my

vices away

I’d rather be killed

by beer and wine

than by

a warning

label

on the beer and wine bottle

telling me

I could get cancer!

in the meantime…

I will wait until everyone else

dies around me

with failed livers

and rotted guts

and

I will be the last survivor

and wait patiently

until it’s my turn

because everyone dies

sooner or later

it matters not who

dies first

(unless of course, it’s me who goes first)

I will wait

my turn

anxiously

fearfully

hum…

I think

I will

build

a corner

bar with a

beer tapper

in my game room

where I shoot

billiards…

come on

let’s see

who wins

let’s play

double or nothing

here,

let me pour

you

a

cold

one

we need

the distraction

would it not be

better

to

die

drunk?
