we leave, poetry, steven humphreys

We leave

we

believed

who

we used

to be

was the us

we’d always

be…

but we shed our

old skin

for new

skin…

we grew away

from our old

selves

like we were empty

worn out

shells…

so

slow

we moved

we forgot

the words

of

our

youthful

anthem

we so lovingly

sang

now

we

laugh

but

differently

not so innocently

like before

we still cry

but we

worry

who

our

tears

fall

upon

our

childish

dreams

ripped

apart

like smoke

in a strong wind

one

hopeful

unfulfilled

dream at

a time,

drifting

disappearing

into the

nondescript

the

ever after

to the place

we will never

know nor

visit

and have

access

to

when we

leave

this

vessel

we believe

we own

and inhabit

that we think

is actually

us.
