Parading Skeletons

Clankity!

Clank!

parading skeletons

march in tidy

rows playing

haunted

music.

the

sundown

street

echoes

through your mind

casting shadows

their memories

keep

in our dreams

at bed time.

they toot their horns

bang their drums

they’re out tonight

while

babies sleep.

witches

roam

and ride their brooms

flying high in

the darkest air

of night

against an afterglow moon.

around the corner

the evening’s fair

I faintly hear

the snare drum’s fare.

around the bend

they all will go

coming soon

down Halloween

row.

the band plays

a dead man’s tune.

I hear them coming

like fish diving

loons.

they’re coming

soon

across the street

you can lean

and I will

stand

tight

against

that

dying

flickering

lamp-post

light

’til

midnight.

dark secrets

we must keep,

an

evil

town

never

sleeps.
