mom and dad, heartbreak, love, loss, someone special

Falling Short

you never got what you

really needed from

old mom and dad

back on the farm.

but, you continued…

deciding life

must go on.

with that pitchfork

in your hand

you went back to

your chore

of shoveling that hay

to all those horses

and cows.

and, then you

realized at some

point that

‘falling short’ is

what you got.


those chickens

pecking on the ground

for worms and such

didn’t fulfill all your

heart’s desires.

then, that special

someone showed up

out of nowhere and didn’t

fill your heart with glee.

they only took that love away

with them when they

left you standing there


the Indian giver.


you got dizzy, fell down

in your flower garden

full of fragrant roses, and

you weren’t feeling fine

like you hoped.

as you looked up

into that great big

beautiful blue sky

you knew

the devil was hiding in the details,

maybe even up in those clouds

looking down at you and laughing

his head off.

we wish we could forget.

but, we can’t.

we never can.

we just keep skimming over

the surface of someone else’s words

missing that certain



in a foregone
