I Remember

I remember a poem by steven james humphreys

I remember the hawk

who swooped down and took my dark friend

old man lizard

(they turn dark when they get old)

I was so saddened that this bird didn’t eat elsewhere

such a beautiful bird of prey which

from time to time would take a bath in my bird bath

like he just came home

he would also drink its water then fly

away like he was going to come back

I haven’t seen him

(or, her)

for quite a while

I haven’t seen my doves and mallard ducks either which used to land

in my pool

I love them all and they are welcome anytime

any hour

any day

any month

any year

even if

I am no longer
