portrait poem by steven james humphreys

a portrait of an old man

an image sitting in an easy chair

enjoying what life has to offer

by the side of a lake

facing the water

he remembers earlier in the day

watching the butterflies flutter overhead

children paddling in their boats

laughing and giggling

with a gentle warm summer breeze

birds flying

leaves falling

and the smell

of BBQ’s

in the air.

and the

day is done

and darkness

is falling

the people

have long gone home

and the old man

still sits frozen

in time.
