kitty in a shoe box

kitty in a shoe box poem by steven james humphreys

kitty in a shoe box

is not asking for a lot

but, it’s all I need

he’s my lot.

I feed him

give him

treats I bought,

play with him

with his toy

I got for him

when he was

a kitten:

a mouse

on a string

with a bell

that goes ding

a ling.

I pet him

and love him today

as I will forevermore…

he’s my pride

and joy

my sweet little boy.

it’s he and me.

watching TV

eating buttered popcorn

with a glass of beer

such joy.

he sleeps at the

foot of my bed

on a folded beach towel

every night.

he’s my delight.

he meows for me

whenever I leave my room

seeking me out

searching

all corridors of the house.

but, when it’s time for bed

he seriously meows for me

to return to my room

and get into bed.

he’s one of my dear baby boys

who asks nothing of me

and gives me the world

in return.
